What is Bin Fresh?
Bin Fresh is a moist wipe with a special formulation that acts as a deterrent to flies and other insects, reduces nasty smells and gives off a faint lime fragrance.
Because the wipes deter flies, maggots are not produced in their vicinity and so bins remain fresher and more hygienic.
This formulation is designed to remain active for 12 – 24 hours.
How do I use it?
Drop one wipe on top of your rubbish bags in the bin each day, early morning is ideal.
How often do I use it?
Daily, for maximum protection against flies and maggots. Missing days will make your bin more susceptible to problems.
When should I use it?
During the warmer months of April to October. Flies are at their most active during this period.
Does it kill maggots?
No, Bin Fresh will only work as a preventative to keep bins free from the flies that cause maggots to occur. It is important, therefore, that you commence using Bin Fresh when the bin is clean and free from maggots.
How do maggots appear in my bins in the first place?
The warm, dark, safe conditions of a rubbish bin in summer make it the ideal place for a female fly to lay her eggs. The eggs are laid in decaying food and waste and, after several days in the pupae (non-feeding) stage, they grow quickly into larvae (maggots).
Where can I store it?
Anywhere you like so long as it is out of reach of children, away from food, drink and animal feeding stuffs and out of direct sunlight. A cool, dark place would be ideal.
I left my tub of wipes somewhere warm and they dried out. Can I still use them?
Yes. You can ‘re-activate’ them by adding a little tap water to the tub and shaking vigorously. Some of the active formulation will have gone, so the wipes won’t offer optimum protection, but you should be able to use them until you can purchase a new tub.
How does it smell?
Bin Fresh has a very refreshing smell, with a hint of lime which is very pleasant and not overpowering, sickly or sweet like some odour giving products.
How does it reduce nasty smells?
Bin Fresh contains a patented deodorising agent that absorbs the nasty smells of rotting foodstuffs while allowing the lime fragrance to remain active.
Does it contain anything toxic?
Bin Fresh contains a small amount of Diethyl-m-toluamide, otherwise known as Deet, a product commonly found in mosquito repellents, which is toxic, but not harmful in these quantities. We do recommend that you wash your hands after use.
Is it bad for my skin? – Will my hands dry out?
No, not when used in accordance with the instruction given, although we do recommend that you wash your hands after use.
Is it bio-degradable?
The pots are recyclable and the wipes are made of polypropylene which is not biodegradable. The reason for using polypropylene for delivering the formulation is to provide strength and ensure that the product is able to work through 24 hours.
Using the wipes keep bins fresh, hygienic and safe from infestations. Many councils have recently or are about to introduce fortnightly refuse collections (AWCs or alternate weekly collections). These changes are intended to increase rates of household recycling and thereby reduce landfill. Although our small, paper wipes are not themselves bio-degradable, by keeping bins free from flies and maggots they facilitate more effect home bin management and greater levels of recycling which is for the greater good of the environment.
What research has been done to prove it works?
We spent many months last summer developing this unique product and carried out a number of tests here in the UK. To make absolutely sure that the effects of Bin Fresh would work even in the hottest weather we also sent a batch of the product to South Africa last December where we tested it amongst families in and around Johannesburg over an extended period. The company we contracted to carry out these trials was a highly reputable and independent research company based in Cape Town.
Does it work with soiled nappies?
A number of households that underwent trials in South Africa had young children and they had no problem with maggots and were amazed at the lack of pungent smells emanating from the bins, even after two weeks between refuse collections. We know from our UK market surveys that households with small children are statistically far more likely to suffer problems with maggots/flies.
What happens if the bins become overloaded and the lid cannot be closed?
Bin Fresh works best within a confined environment. If the bins are overflowing and the wipes placed on top of rubbish bags in an open air environment they cannot perform properly. Even so, flies are less likely to lay eggs within close vicinity of the wipes. Neither the deodorising agent nor the fragrance will be able to work as well either, so it is better to keep the bin closed with the Bin Fresh wipes inside and place the most recent waste bags outside the bin, tightly tied.
Also, as you may be aware, due to automated lifting equipment, some councils will not collect from overladen wheelie bins with open lids, so it is best to ensure that the lid is properly closed.
Where can I get it?
Bin Fresh is only available online at present, but a leading supermarket chain has agreed to stock it shortly.
How much does it cost?
£7.99 for eight weeks protection. Although there is a £1 discount off online orders if you recommend Bin Fresh to one of your friends or neighbours.
Why do the wipes cost that much?
Bin Fresh is an effective, quality product employing a patented formulation. The active formulation comprises ingredients which not only deter flies, but also neutralise nasty smells and leave a mild fragrance. At less that £1 per week, Bin Fresh protects your family from the blight of maggots. Those who have suffered such pests before will understand that this is excellent value for safety from infestations during the summer months when people want to be outdoors enjoying their gardens and not worrying about maggots wriggling away in their bins.
Is the online postage and packing charge per pot or per order?
Per order. The P&P charge for one pot is £1.50, £1.38 of which is first class postage. However, if you order two or three pots at the same time Bin Fresh will absorb the additional postage and packing charges and still only charge you £1.50 for the total order.
